Falcons’ historic run continues with 52-37 win in IHSA Class 2A super-sectional over Pleasant Plains

SPRINGFIELD — Connor Birky was the face of Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley boys’ basketball on Tuesday night.

Not in the sense that he was superior to the rest of the Falcons, though he led all scorers with 17 points in a Class 2A super-sectional game versus Pleasant Plains.

GCMS football defeats Fisher 56-0 in battle of unbeatens

FISHER — The difference between Nos. 2 and 9 couldn’t have been more stark Friday night at Kellar Field.

One football team produced six rushing touchdowns, a defensive score and a special teams tally in addition to recovering two fumbles and permitting 66 yards of opposing offense.

The other side was working against a running clock the entire second half.

Boys basketball: GCMS wins Monticello Holiday Tournament championship; PBL takes fourth place

MONTICELLO — Bryce Barnes leaped between four Ridgeview players after missing a free throw in Saturday’s Monticello Holiday Hoopla final, clasping his hands around the basketball to roars of approval from Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley supporters.

The burly junior then dribbled toward halfcourt and grinned, following that with some shouts of joy.

PAXTON — Benton Freeseman seemed a bit indecisive as he rushed up the court Tuesday for the Monticello boys’ basketball team.

Should he dunk against Paxton-Buckley-Loda, or should he attempt the safer layup? The junior wound up somewhere in between, and the ball rolled off the rim.
