Area banks retain their BauerFinancial ratings

Banks with offices in the Paxton area retained their previous ratings in the latest ratings from BauerFinancial, based on data for the financial quarter that ended March 31, 2015.

Two-thirds of area banks received BauerFinancial’s highest rating of 5 stars. None got the lowest, second-lowest or third-lowest ratings — zero stars, 1-star and 2-star.


EIEC plans new substation in Loda area

LODA — Eastern Illini Electric Cooperative (EIEC), based in Paxton, is planning three new substations — one each in the St. Joseph, Loda and Tolono areas — according to Bob Hunzinger, president and CEO of the power cooperative.


Rick Nelson named News-Gazette's Farm Leader of Year

PAXTON — Growing up on a farm, Rick Nelson came to realize what he liked — and didn’t like — about farming.

“I knew I didn’t like chores,” he said. “I don’t like redundant tasks. I don’t want to do the same thing today as yesterday.”

Milford bank's rating improves from 'good' to 'excellent'

MILFORD — The Citizens State Bank of Milford improved from a 3 1/2-star (“good”) rating to a 4-star (“excellent”) rating in the latest ratings from BauerFinancial based on data for the financial quarter that ended Dec. 31, 2014.

All other banks with offices in the Paxton Record’s coverage area retained the ratings they had at the close of the Sept. 30 quarter.


Ag chief: Use federal programs for rural Internet access

CHAMPAIGN — U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack urged rural communities in East Central Illinois to take advantage of federal programs to help make high-speed Internet access available in their areas.

In an interview Thursday with The News-Gazette, Vilsack expanded on President Barack Obama’s call Wednesday to make fast, affordable broadband available to more parts of the country.


Busey completes purchase of Pekin-based bank

CHAMPAIGN — First Busey Corp. has completed its previously announced acquisition of Herget Financial Corp., the holding company for Pekin-based Herget Bank.

Champaign-based First Busey acquired 100 percent of Herget Financial’s outstanding common stock for $34.1 million in cash, according to the company’s announcement today.

Razed site may become park — or opportunity

GIBSON CITY — There is a gap in downtown Gibson City, and Randy Arends is not quite sure how it will be filled.

Maybe a new business will elect to build where two dilapidated structures were torn down, or maybe Arends will develop the lots as an outdoor plaza where people can eat lunch, sip coffee and enjoy green space.

LODA — The Federated Bank and the Citizens State Bank were both upgraded in the latest ratings from BauerFinancial based on data for the financial quarter that ended June 30.

The Federated Bank, which has branches in Onarga, Loda, Bradley and Chebanse, was upgraded from 4 stars (“excellent”) to BauerFinancial’s highest rating of 5 stars (“superior”).


Area banks maintain their BauerFinancial ratings

East Central Illinois banks retained the ratings they had at the close of the Dec. 31, 2013, quarter.

More than half the area banks received BauerFinancial’s highest rating of 5 stars. No area banks received the lowest or second-lowest ratings — zero stars and 1 star.
