Area college catchup: PBL graduate Cliff Hastings coaches Parkland College to NCAA Division II national championship

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Throughout the season, Parkland College’s volleyball team sought to establish an identity of its own.

It was a tough task following a squad that was unbeaten and won a national championship in 2015.

Coach Cliff Hastings’ Cobras on Saturday nonetheless found a way to surpass their immediate predecessors.

NORMAL — Kristy Arie wasn’t happy with Friday’s state tournament outcome for her Iroquois West girls’ basketball team, but she found satisfying aspects.

Before the unranked Raiders dropped a 49-36 decision to third-rated Hardin Calhoun at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena, they held their own in a Class 1A game that was within two possessions with 3 1/2 minutes left.

CHAMPAIGN — Jacob Franklin of the GCMS/Fisher wrestling team finished fourth in the IHSA Class 1A state meet’s 182-pound class.

The senior reached the third-place match after winning via 5-3 decision in the wrestleback semifinals over Bismarck-Henning’s Jarod Noel before getting pinned in 2:57 in the third-place match by Coal City’s Riley Kauzlaric.

PHOENIX — The Parkland College volleyball team, which includes former Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School standout Kailey Kleinert, played in Saturday’s NJCAA Division II national championship match.
