The source of Saturday night’s loud boom that rattled windows in Paxton and was said to be heard in towns as far as 30 miles away remained a mystery a day later, leading to speculation of all sorts at coffee shops and churches Sunday.

UPDATED: Loda woman dies in two-vehicle accident in rural Ford County

URBANA — A Loda woman died Wednesday after a two-vehicle collision at a rural intersection in Ford County.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Lori Whitfield, 54, was pronounced dead at 12:57 p.m. Wednesday at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where she had been taken for treatment.

Trio face weapons charges after gun fired out of car in Rantoul

URBANA — Two Loda men and one Rankin man were arrested on weapons charges following an incident Thanksgiving evening in rural Rantoul.

Gibson City house fire’s casualties: 2 dogs, 2 cats

GIBSON CITY — A late afternoon house fire in rural Gibson City claimed the lives of two dogs and two cats, but no humans were injured.

Gibson Area Fire Protection District Chief Bruce Kallal said firefighters were called to a blaze at 194 N. Illinois 47, about 2 miles south of Gibson City, at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Paxton man assaulted, robbed in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — Police are looking for three people who knocked a Paxton man unconscious and stole his wallet early Christmas morning in Champaign.

According to a police report, a 21-year-old Paxton man was at the corner of First and Green streets in Champaign at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 25, when three men approached him and hit him until he was unconscious.

Iroquois County sheriff: Milford restaurant owner found murdered

MILFORD — The Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the murder of a Milford restaurant owner early Sunday morning.

According to a sheriff’s report, deputies and Milford police were called to a burglary in progress at 2:01 a.m. at the Milford Family Restaurant, 107 E. Jones St.

Watseka man dies following motorcycle crash in Iroquois County

URBANA — Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said that no autopsy will be performed on a Watseka man who died in a motorcycle  crash on Saturday.

Northrup said that Alan J. Anderson, 63, of Watseka, was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the emergency room at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Springfield man dies in crash in Ford County

PAXTON — A Springfield man died in a one-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in rural Ford County.

According to a news release from District 21 Illinois State Police, Christopher T. Ford, 34, of Springfield, was driving east on Illinois 9 near Ford County Road 2500 East, east of Paxton, when his vehicle left the highway  at 4:21 p.m. Sunday.

FEMA will help with damage assessment

SPRINGFIELD — Federal help could be on the way for Villa Grove, Watseka and other communities still recovering from recent flooding.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner announced Thursday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will assist with damage assessments in areas affected by heavy rains in late December and early January.

Cissna Park man sentenced to 20 years in federal prison

URBANA — A Cissna Park man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for conspiracy to possess cocaine with the intent to distribute.

On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Colin S. Bruce sentenced Valeriano J. “Billy” Zarate, 41, to two decades in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release.
