Iroquois County steer wins honors at state fair

SPRINGFIELD — Buckley resident Hunter Weber’s Hereford steer was named reserve grand champion Land of Lincoln steer during Saturday’s Parade of Champions at the Illinois State Fair.

Ford County Fair entry deadline nearing

MELVIN — The deadline for all junior and open show entries at this year’s Ford County Fair is Monday, June 18.

Entries should be sent to: Jane Meyer, 1795 N. 1800 East Road, Thawville, IL 60968. They must be received or postmarked by June 18.

Entries may also be brought to the secretary’s office on the fairgrounds in Melvin between noon and 4 p.m. June 18.

Buckley's Kaeb named Farm Credit agriculture scholar

BUCKLEY — Travis Kaeb of Buckley was recognized as one of 30 members of the class of 2018 Farm Credit agriculture scholars during a luncheon at Farm Credit Illinois (FCI) in Mahomet on Thursday, May 31.

Sibley's Quinley takes state 4-H horse-judging title

GALVA — Only five points separated the top six finishers in the 2018 Illinois 4-H State Horse Judging Contest held April 28 at Black Hawk College in Galva.

Ford County 4-H member Katie Quinley, 16, of Sibley, earned 386 out of 400 points in the contest to take the title. Just two points behind, 13-year-old Hannah Maher of Knox County earned second place.

Loda elevator no longer accepting grain

LODA — Ludlow Cooperative Elevator Co. has closed its grain elevator in Loda, effective immediately, and has no plans to re-open it.

“More than likely it will be for good,” said Ludlow Co-op’s general manager, Paul Seaman.

3 Iroquois County high school seniors awarded Farm Credit scholarships

Three high school seniors in Iroquois County were recently selected to receive a 2018 Farm Credit agriculture scholarship.

4-H club distributes awards to members

ROBERTS — The Town & Country Helpers 4-H Club held an awards ceremony during its Nov. 5 meeting at the Roberts Gym for its members who were not present at the Ford County 4-H Achievement Program on Oct. 29 at the American Lutheran Church in Gibson City. Members received a variety of awards, ranging from certificates to medals to 4-H cups.

Dow AgroSciences to close Gibson City research station

GIBSON CITY — Dow AgroSciences LLC plans to close its research station south of Gibson City by year’s end, a company official said Thursday.

The facility, located at 454 E. Ford County Road 300 North, was acquired by Dow AgroSciences, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Co., from Dairyland Seed Company Inc. in 2008.

Farmers mailed ballots for FSA's county committee elections

PAXTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture began mailing ballots Monday, Nov. 6, to farmers and ranchers who are eligible to cast ballots in the 2017 Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committee elections.

Producers must return their ballots to their local FSA offices by Dec. 4 to ensure their vote is counted.

Farmers reminded of Aug. 1 deadline for ARC, PLC programs

SPRINGFIELD — Farmers and ranchers are reminded that they have until Aug. 1 to enroll in Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and/or Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs for the 2017 crop year.

The programs trigger financial protections for participating agricultural producers when market forces cause substantial drops in crop prices or revenues.
