IDOA schedules Clean Sweep collection in Central Illinois

SPRINGFIELD — Residents of eight Illinois counties — including Ford and Iroquois counties — can dispose of unwanted agrichemicals for free this year through the Illinois Department of Agriculture’s agricultural pesticide “Clean Sweep” program.


Boma, Hornstein serving as Growmark interns

BLOOMINGTON — Jesse Boma and Austin Hornstein, who are both agribusiness majors at Illinois State University, are participating in this year’s Growmark summer internship program.

Hornstein is the son of Carl and Beth Hornstein of Melvin. Boma is the son of Teresa and Scott Boma of Gibson City.


Trio named national proficiency finalists

CULLOM — Braden Ifft, Jared Haberkorn and Kacie Haag, all 2016 Tri-Point High School graduates, will compete in the national finals in October in Indianapolis for their work on their FFA proficiency projects.


Hazen, Dubble inducted into Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame

SPRINGFIELD — Christine Hazen of Ford County and Nita Dubble of Iroquois County were among 74 4-H volunteers inducted into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame during an Aug. 20 ceremony in the Orr Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.


Jarboe looking forward to augering in retirement from co-op

PERDUEVILLE — When Bill Jarboe is asked how he thinks he’ll be remembered by his co-workers at Ludlow Cooperative Elevator Co. once he retires from his 45-year career there at the end of this month, the 65-year-old’s first thought is that he doesn’t really know.

Birkey’s Farm Store Inc. to acquire Farm Pride equipment

CHAMPAIGN — Birkey’s Farm Store Inc., a full-line Case IH and Case Construction dealer, has agreed to acquire the Farm Pride network of equipment dealerships located in Arthur, Shelbyville, Casey, Newton, and Mattoon.

The acquisition is expected to close in mid-August.


Ford County 4-H Show results announced

MELVIN — Following are results from the Ford County 4-H Show held at the 2016 Ford County Fair:

Iroquois County wind farm developers sued by landowners

WATSEKA — The owners of farmland used to build the Pilot Hill Wind Farm in Iroquois County are suing the wind farm’s developers, arguing that they are still owed money for access roads built on their property and for damage done to their land during construction.


Nomination period begins for Farm Service Agency county committees

SPRINGFIELD — The nomination period for farmers and ranchers to serve on local Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees began June 15.

To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in an FSA-administered program, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and live in the local administrative area where they are nominated.


Entry deadline is June 13 for Ford County Fair events

MELVIN — The deadline for junior and open show entries for this year’s Ford County Fair is Monday, June 13.

Entries should be sent to Jane Meyer, 1795 N. 1800E Rd., Thawville, IL 60968. They must be received or postmarked by June 13.

Entries may also be brought to the secretary’s office on the fairgrounds in Melvin between noon and 4 p.m. June 13.
