Entries, vendors sought for Gibson City's Lighted Christmas Parade

GIBSON CITY — Gibson City’s 24th annual Lighted Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Gibson Area Chamber of Commerce, is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, with the parade’s theme being “An Old-Fashioned Christmas.”


List of upcoming community events (Sept. 19, 2018)

MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) meets from 9 to 11 a.m. on the third Friday of each month at the Paxton Church of the Nazarene, 302 W. State St., Paxton. Meetings for the 2018-19 year will be held Sept. 21, Oct. 19, Nov. 16, Dec. 21, Jan. 18, Feb. 15, March 15, on a date to be determined in April and on May 17.


After one-year hiatus, Higgins brothers claim cookoff title

PAXTON — With not having competed in a barbecue cookoff in two years, brothers Joe and Tim Higgins didn’t think they would be named the winners of the seventh annual Paxton Swine ‘N Dine BBQ Contest on Saturday.

The two Gibson City men had done well in past editions of the contest in downtown Paxton, having claimed reserve champion honors in 2015 and third overall in 2014.


Teens can learn to sew at October class at library

GIBSON CITY — Students in middle school and high school can learn to sew during classes scheduled for October at the Moyer District Library in Gibson City.

Participating students will be making T-shirt pillows during the classes, scheduled for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, and Thursday, Oct. 25.


Sibley church selling variety of nuts

SIBLEY — The women of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sibley are selling a variety of nuts and fruits during the next few weeks.

Available for purchase are:

— For $10.50: Pecan halves, pecan pieces, praline pecans, light walnut halves and pieces, whole cashews, mixed nuts (with no peanuts) and milk chocolate-covered cashews


Tattered flags being collected for flag-retirement ceremony

PIPER CITY — The Gov. Thomas Ford Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is collecting U.S. flags so that they can be properly retired during a public flag retirement ceremony scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Branch Park at 200 E. Walnut St. in Piper City.

Mayor wants to change name of Gibson City's holiday parade

GIBSON CITY — The Gibson Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Lighted Holiday Parade could have a new name starting with this year’s event.


Gronewold, Meents to be inducted into PBL Hall of Fame on Sept. 27

PAXTON — Carmen Gronewold and Tom Meents will be inducted into the PBL Alumni Hall of Fame during Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School’s homecoming week later this month.

Meents, a 1985 graduate of Paxton High School, is a championship-winning driver in the Monster Truck series. Gronewold, a 1975 graduate of Buckley-Loda High School, is a Lutheran missionary in Nepal.


Shriners to sponsor distracted-driving program at library

GIBSON CITY — The Corn Belt Shrine Club of Gibson City will be sponsoring an event to help raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at the Moyer District Library in Gibson City
