City donates $6,000 toward Paxton Swine 'N' Dine BBQ Contest & Festival

PAXTON — The Paxton City Council voted 6-0 Tuesday night to donate $6,000 toward the eighth annual Paxton Swine ‘N’ Dine BBQ Contest & Festival, an event that is expected to again feature a concert headlined by a nationally known musical act.

Winners of cookie bakeoff announced

PAXTON — Seven people participated in PRIDE in Paxton’s Firehouse Cookie Baking Appreciation Event last week.

Winners were: Whitney Townsend, first place; Tabitha Eichelberger, second place; and Melinda Garrelts, third place.

Prizes were awarded.

Also entering the contest were Alisah Weber, Dawn Glad, Evelyn Eppelheimer and Kara Kinzinger.

After one-year hiatus, Higgins brothers claim cookoff title

PAXTON — With not having competed in a barbecue cookoff in two years, brothers Joe and Tim Higgins didn’t think they would be named the winners of the seventh annual Paxton Swine ‘N Dine BBQ Contest on Saturday.

The two Gibson City men had done well in past editions of the contest in downtown Paxton, having claimed reserve champion honors in 2015 and third overall in 2014.

BBQ festival keeps getting bigger, better

PAXTON — What started out in 2012 as a small, backyard barbecue contest has evolved into Paxton’s biggest event of the year.

And the seventh annual version of the Paxton Swine ‘N Dine BBQ Contest & Festival — scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, in downtown Paxton — is expected to be perhaps the biggest yet.

Elliott church discontinues annual supper

ELLIOTT — Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in rural Elliott will no longer be holding its pancake and sausage supper that had been held for years on the first Thursday of December.

“The congregation would like to thank everybody for their past support for this supper,” said Ursula Hustedt, who is affiliated with the church.

PAXTON — Camp’s BBQ-Crew, headed by Paxton resident Marcus Camp, saw success in Saturday’s fifth annual Paxton Swine ‘N’ Dine BBQ Contest & Festival despite having competed in barbecue cookoffs for only the last four years.

Winning BBQ cookoff didn't seem likely after morning misfortune

PAXTON — Cameron Walder and his younger brother, Kendall, had their smokers lit early Saturday morning.

Luckily, they had more than one going.

Cameron, 30, and Kendall, 20, discovered a problem with one of their two smokers after leaving their barbecue cookoff setup on North Market Street for a few minutes to eat breakfast at the nearby Arcade Cafe & Pancake House.

PAXTON — The Paxton Swine ‘N’ Dine BBQ Contest & Festival was originally started four years ago with modest intentions.

What organizers did not realize at the time was that it would end up being one of the biggest local events of the year — attracting hundreds, if not thousands, of people, and not just those from Paxton.
