NSDAR chapter celebrates state's bicentennial

GIBSON CITY — Because Dec. 3 was the 200th birthday of the state of Illinois, members of the Gov. Thomas Ford Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) celebrated the bicentennial with a special program titled “Celebrate the Prairie State” and served birthday cake decorated with the bicentennial symbol.  

Veterans invited to join new book club at Loda library

LODA — Veterans wondering what to do over the long winter can join the Loda Township Library’s newly formed Veterans Book Club. 

“We’ll supply the space and books,” library director Teri Hennessy said.

The club will meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month starting in January.

Winners of cookie bakeoff announced

PAXTON — Seven people participated in PRIDE in Paxton’s Firehouse Cookie Baking Appreciation Event last week.

Winners were: Whitney Townsend, first place; Tabitha Eichelberger, second place; and Melinda Garrelts, third place.

Prizes were awarded.

Also entering the contest were Alisah Weber, Dawn Glad, Evelyn Eppelheimer and Kara Kinzinger.

Christmas crafts workshop to be held at Loda library

LODA — Students in third through fifth grades are invited to attend a Christmas crafts workshop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Loda Township Library, 105 S. 1st St., Loda.

“We’ll make all sorts of holiday decorations,” said the library’s director, Teri Hennessy. “No need to bring anything — just your holiday spirit.”

A holiday house-decorating contest is being sponsored by PRIDE in Paxton. To be considered for the contest, homes should be lit up and decorated between 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, when judges will be driving around town to select the winners.

75th annual 'Messiah' performance set for Sunday in Gibson City

GIBSON CITY — This year’s “Messiah” performance will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Gibson City Bible Church, located on Gibson City’s west side at 309 N. Illinois 47.

PAXTON — Victor Johnson’s popular animated Christmas light display on West Patton Street in Paxton is taking a holiday vacation, of sorts.

Roberts library's 5,000-plus books to be given away next spring

ROBERTS — The 5,000-plus books that remain at the shuttered Roberts Public Library are expected to be given away on a first-come, first-served basis next spring.

The village board discussed how to dispose of the collection during its Nov. 5 meeting, when it was suggested that an open house/liquidation event be held.

Entries sought for Paxton's Christmas parade

PAXTON — PRIDE in Paxton’s Christmas Parade is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, in downtown Paxton.

“We are inviting all members of our armed forces, businesses, marching units, bands, Christian and civic units, floats, antique vehicles, new cars, farm machinery, individuals and families to enter and participate in this year’s parade,” a news release from PRIDE said.
