Gold Star Mother to speak at GCMS Veteran's Day celebration

GIBSON CITY — A Veteran’s Day celebration is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in the gymnasium at Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley High School.

The community is invited to attend the ceremony, which will include a keynote presentation by Vonda Rodgers, a Gold Star Mother, and performances by the students of the GCMS school district.

Craft party, painting party set at Gibson City library

GIBSON CITY — A craft party followed by a painting party are scheduled for early November at the Moyer District Library in Gibson City.

During the craft party, scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 9, participants will construct a lit-up snowman made from wreaths, including a floral spray and initial to personalize the décor.


Christmas house-decorating contest announced in Paxton

PAXTON — Paxton residents are being encouraged to decorate their homes for the holidays for a chance to win cash prizes.

The nonprofit organization PRIDE in Paxton is sponsoring a Christmas house-decorating contest that will award $50 cash prizes to four winners.


Queen of Hearts raffles to raise funds for Gibson City skatepark

GIBSON CITY — Members of a committee that is trying to raise funds for a skatepark in memory of former Gibson City alderman Ed Day hope that their first major fundraiser brings the community together in support of the cause.

Training for volunteer tutors available

GIBSON CITY — Through Parkland College, adults who struggle with illiteracy can connect with a tutor who volunteers his or her time to teach reading, basic math and writing skills. Two training sessions are quickly approaching.


Halloween parade set for Oct. 31 in downtown Paxton

PAXTON — The Paxton Park District’s board of commissioners finalized plans for the annual park district-sponsored Halloween Parade during its meeting last week.

The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31.
