Tattered flags being collected for flag-retirement ceremony

PIPER CITY — The Gov. Thomas Ford Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is collecting U.S. flags so that they can be properly retired during a public flag retirement ceremony scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Branch Park at 200 E. Walnut St. in Piper City.


List of upcoming community events (Sept. 14, 2018)

MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) meets from 9 to 11 a.m. on the third Friday of each month at the Paxton Church of the Nazarene, 302 W. State St., Paxton. Meetings for the 2018-19 year will be held Sept. 21, Oct. 19, Nov. 16, Dec. 21, Jan. 18, Feb. 15, March 15, on a date to be determined in April and on May 17.


Paxton author to hold book-signing event on Sept. 15

PAXTON — “Sometimes outward appearances can be most deceiving.”

This quote is one of the underlining themes of author Tabitha Eichelberger’s new book, “Diary of a Lonely Prom Queen (Reflections on Parenting Teenage Girls from a Teenage Survivor).”

Eichelberger, a Paxton native and current resident, began work on her book more than six years ago.


Mayor wants to change name of Gibson City's holiday parade

GIBSON CITY — The Gibson Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Lighted Holiday Parade could have a new name starting with this year’s event.


Gronewold, Meents to be inducted into PBL Hall of Fame on Sept. 27

PAXTON — Carmen Gronewold and Tom Meents will be inducted into the PBL Alumni Hall of Fame during Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School’s homecoming week later this month.

Meents, a 1985 graduate of Paxton High School, is a championship-winning driver in the Monster Truck series. Gronewold, a 1975 graduate of Buckley-Loda High School, is a Lutheran missionary in Nepal.


Shriners to sponsor distracted-driving program at library

GIBSON CITY — The Corn Belt Shrine Club of Gibson City will be sponsoring an event to help raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at the Moyer District Library in Gibson City

Divorce Care sessions are being held at 6:30 p.m. each Monday at the Gibson City Bible Church, 309 N. Illinois 47, Gibson City. Divorce Care is a weekly seminar and support group that will help people heal from the hurt of a divorce or separation. Participants learn practical information and gain hope for the future.


BBQ festival keeps getting bigger, better

PAXTON — What started out in 2012 as a small, backyard barbecue contest has evolved into Paxton’s biggest event of the year.

And the seventh annual version of the Paxton Swine ‘N Dine BBQ Contest & Festival — scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, in downtown Paxton — is expected to be perhaps the biggest yet.


Harvest Fest to run for 2 days in Gibson

GIBSON CITY — Gibson City’s fourth annual Harvest Fest takes place Friday night and all day Saturday in downtown Gibson City.


Paxton shooting range open for target practice Sept. 22

PAXTON — The Paxton Police Department’s shooting range will be open to the public for target practice, weather permitting, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22.

The daily fee is $10 per person.

The fee covers the person’s right to use the property and shooting targets, but people still need to provide their own gun, ammunition and ear and eye protection.
