Mediacom named nation's top cable operator

MOLINE — Mediacom Communications has been named the nation’s top cable operator by a leading industry publication.

In its annual “Top Ops Awards” issue, Cablefax announced that Mediacom, with its record-setting performance in 2015 and impressive start in 2016, edged out larger cable companies to earn the coveted “MSO of the Year” award.


Company has laid hundreds of miles of fiber-optic cable

RANTOUL — Metro Communications, the Sullivan-based company that has purchased the Conxxus system in Paxton, has laid hundreds of miles of fiber optic cable throughout Central Illinois, including through Rantoul.

The company laid an underground communication duct system in 2015 through Rantoul along U.S. 136 from Interstate 57 east to the wastewater treatment plant for about $90,000.


Cable-Internet company promises to turn Paxton company around

PAXTON — Metro Communications President Zak Horn knew a lot of work had to be done when his company bought the assets of Conxxus — a Paxton-based cable TV, Internet and phone provider.

Horn said his company has started to upgrade what has been left undone for the past 15 years.

Meeting set for next week on fiber-optic network in Paxton

PAXTON — Businesses and government officials in Paxton are being invited to an informational meeting next week to discuss the Paxton-Buckley-Loda school district’s recent connection to a statewide fiber-optic network and the potential for the network to be expanded to elsewhere in the community so that others can reap the benefits of high-speed Internet service.

GIFFORD — Mediacom Communications reports that its network technicians rebuilt a fiber connection node in the tornado-torn community of Gifford to provide broadband service to the fire department facility that is serving as the command center for storm recovery efforts.


Onarga Theater to reopen

ONARGA (AP) — Fundraisers have brought in enough money to save a one-screen movie theater in the small Illinois village of Onarga.

Randy and Cheryl Lizzio tell The Daily Journal in Kankakee that they’ve ordered a new digital projection system for the Onarga Theater. Onarga is a village of about 1,300 people 80 miles south of Chicago in Iroquois County.


Wind farm owner says progress being made in legal dispute with township

WATSEKA — The firm that owns the Settlers Trail Wind Farm in Iroquois County said Thursday that progress is being made to resolve an ongoing legal dispute with Sheldon Township.


Mediacom digital upgrade proceeding smoothly

PONTIAC — Mediacom Communications announced that its digital upgrade is proceeding smoothly and the next step will be to remove most analog signal reception on Tuesday, July 23.

Mediacom also made public its list of 40 new high-definition (HD) channels to be added in early August to boost the number of available HD viewing choices above the 100-channel mark.


Flying car to hit the skies at Wisconsin airshow

OSH KOSH, Wis. — The Terrafugia Transition — a prototype of a flying car created by Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School graduate Sam Schweighart — will make its first airshow appearance at the Expiremental Aircraft Association’s AirVenture event at Wittman Regional Airport in Osh Kosh, Wis., from July 29 to Aug. 4.
