Pillar and Ground Independent Baptist Church opens in Gibson City

GIBSON CITY — Not long after Wisconsin native Jeremy Baier arrived at Gibson City’s Prairie Baptist Church, the small congregation began to fall apart.

“What we saw after we got here was struggle and tension — power struggles over who wants to be in charge,” the 42-year-old pastor recalled. “And I’m like, ‘Really, God? Is this where you called me to?’

“Boy, it was really tough.”

Hymn Festival set for Aug. 20 in Gibson City

GIBSON CITY — The Gibson Area Music Foundation (GAMF) will host its annual Hymn Festival at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, at the United Methodist Church of Gibson City.

The event is free and open to people of all ages. The audience is invited to sing along on most hymns, with music provided in hymnals and lyrics projected on a large screen.

Paxton physician passes away

PAXTON — Dr. George Bark, a physician at the Paxton Clinic, died Monday night, a local funeral home has confirmed.

Dr. Bark had been on life support Monday in the critical-care unit at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, surrounded by family and friends, according to a Facebook post by his church, the First Lutheran Church in Paxton.

Church members help beautify Paxton

PAXTON — About 20 people representing several Paxton churches pitched in to help clean up various areas in town on Saturday.

The group met at Pells Park, where the Rev. Jimm Wood convened the group. He quoted the book of Zechariah, in which God told his followers not to mock small beginnings.

GIBSON CITY — The Gibson Area Music Foundation’s annual performance of Handel’s “Messiah” will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Gibson City Bible Church.

GIBSON CITY — A professional singer with strong family ties to the Gibson City area will be performing once again as a soloist in this year’s performance of Handel’s “Messiah.”

The performance will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Gibson City Bible Church, located on the west edge of Gibson City along Illinois 47.

Nusses attend Catholic mass with Pope Francis

Mitch and Beth Nuss of Paxton recently returned from Italy, where they had the opportunity to attend Catholic Mass with Pope Francis for the canonization of Mother Teresa becoming a saint on Sunday, Sept. 4.  

In January, the Nusses began planning their trip to Italy. As dates and plans came together, they discovered they would be in Rome on a Sunday.

BUCKLEY — Maybe it’s Buckley’s strong Lutheran heritage. Or maybe it’s the longtime presence of parochial schools in town.

Whatever the reason, the town’s only remaining church continues to thrive 146 years after the congregation was founded.

St. John’s Lutheran Church’s membership “has always been more than the town’s population,” said church member Ruth Jones.
