Inn’s wedding refusal results in discrimination suit

GALENA (AP) — A Wisconsin couple has filed a discrimination charge with the state of Illinois saying that an inn owner refused to host their wedding because they wanted a non-religious service.

BUCKLEY — Maybe it’s Buckley’s strong Lutheran heritage. Or maybe it’s the longtime presence of parochial schools in town.

Whatever the reason, the town’s only remaining church continues to thrive 146 years after the congregation was founded.

St. John’s Lutheran Church’s membership “has always been more than the town’s population,” said church member Ruth Jones.

GIBSON CITY — Since 2011, Bishop R. Daniel Conlon has been visiting the 120 parishes of the Joliet Diocese. The weekend of Jan. 9 marked Our Lady of Lourdes parish’s turn to host the bishop.

Soloists to be featured in 'The Messiah'

GIBSON CITY — Area singers and professional musicians will combine to present Handel’s well-known work, “The Messiah,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at the Gibson City Bible Church on Illinois 47 on Gibson City’s west side.

The Gibson Area Music Foundation sponsors the annual performance, which is again being directed by Willie Summerville of Champaign.

CHICAGO — The Illinois Human Rights Commission ruled Thursday that a bed-and-breakfast near Paxton violated the civil rights of a same-sex couple who were denied the opportunity to hold their civil union ceremony there in 2011.

Rockin' Route 9 concert slated for Aug. 15 at Pells Park

PAXTON — A free concert at Pells Park in Paxton — “Rockin’ Route 9” — is set for 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, featuring performances by State of Grace, Weston Henry and D.J. Tommy C.

Food will be available from Central Lean, Dawn’s Kettle Corn adn Monical’s Pizza.

There will also be a bounce house and games.

The event is sponsored by the Paxton United Methodist Church.

Upcoming Hymn Festival's theme is 'The History of Popular Music in Hymnody'

GIBSON CITY — The annual Hymn Festival sponsored by the Gibson Area Music Foundation will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, at the United Methodist Church in Gibson City.

Attendees at the seventh annual event will enjoy singing selected hymns with background information given about each.

Paxton food pantry gets new coordinator

PAXTON — The Hands of Christ Food Pantry (HCFP) is entering its fourth year of existence, and the newest wrinkle in the organization’s evolution is a new coordinator, Barb Zimmerman.

Zimmerman will oversee the pantry’s overall operations, although board members Cara Fitton and Lani Jones have had responsibilities for a great deal of the work so far.

New church name, same ministry hopes for Woods

PAXTON — The Vineyard Church of Paxton’s transition to Hope Vineyard Church on April 1 means more than just a name change.

Over two decades, the Rev. Jimm and DeDe Wood have wanted to make more of an impact on their community. In the next two weeks, the culmination of that reality will occur at their church.
