Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive set for May 12

The 26th annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is Saturday, May 12.

Sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), the food drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns. The post office in Gibson City is participating, but Paxton's post office is not this year due to being short on staff.

Cops deliver Christmas meals to families in need

PAXTON — About 50 families in Ford County were to receive a free Christmas meal Friday, courtesy of the Illini Lodge 17 Fraternal Order of Police’s food basket program.

Ford County sheriff’s deputy Dave Kaeding stopped by the Paxton Police Department on Friday morning, towing some 30 food baskets, along with hams and turkeys, using a trailer attached to his sport-utility vehicle.

GIBSON CITY — The Gibson Area Food Pantry is relocating later this month.

Starting with the Nov. 25 food distribution, the food pantry will be operated out of the former Alco building at 619 E. First St. on Gibson City’s east side.

Loda Lions Club seeks help paying its winter utility bills

LODA — The Loda Lions Club said it will be forced to sell its building in Loda if it cannot raise enough money to cover its utility bills this winter.

The club, founded in 1957, recently sent a letter to businesses asking for help.

Food pantry, Elite Performance to move into shuttered Alco store

GIBSON CITY — Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services has purchased the long-shuttered Alco store on Gibson City’s east side and plans to relocate its local Elite Performance facility to the site, along with the Gibson Area Food Pantry.

Rob Schmitt, chief executive officer of Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services, said the purchase of the store occurred several months ago.

Toy drive in memory of Alex Faulkner under way

PAXTON — Each September, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, friends and family of the late Alex Faulkner collect toys to fill the treasure chest at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Peoria, where Faulkner was treated for cancer for three years.
