Toy drive will benefit Clara Peterson Elementary School kids

PAXTON — The second annual Nordic Total Fitness toy drive continues through Friday, Dec. 16, with all donated toys going to needy kids at Clara Peterson Elementary School in Paxton. 

New toys can be dropped off at either Nordic Total Fitness at 207 N. Market St. in Paxton or the Dollar General store at 783 S. Railroad Ave. in Paxton. 


Expansion of Gibson City playground planned

GIBSON CITY — A year removed from dedicating its new playground at Gibson City’s North Park, the local Rotary Club is getting ready to embark on its next community service project — an expansion of that same playground.


Legion to give out Christmas baskets to GCMS families

GIBSON CITY — Starting Nov. 7, the Lee Lowery American Legion Post No. 568 will be seeking names of families in the area to receive Christmas baskets.

To qualify to receive a Christmas basket, families must live in the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley school district and be on the free or reduced-price meal plan.


Agency offers to help pay low-income households' heating bills

PAXTON — The East Central Illinois Community Action Agency began accepting appointments for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) on Oct. 3 to assist households with children under age 6 with home heating utility costs and disconnected households without energy service.

LIHEAP is a state and federally funded program for families with low incomes.


‘We’re that close’ to eradicating polio

GIBSON CITY — “We’re that close,” Rotary District 6490 Governor Kevin Yonce told members of the Gibson City Rotary Club on Aug. 31, showing his thumb and index finger only a half-inch apart.


United Community Fund drive under way in Paxton

PAXTON — The annual United Community Fund drive in Paxton is under way, as notices were mailed last week to Paxton residents.

Thirteen non-profit organizations will be benefiting from the United Community Fund’s goal of raising $28,670 this year.

Patty's Patch supplying fresh produce to area food pantries

LODA — Patty’s Patch started out, as Patty Struening says, as an “accident.”

The 58-year-old Loda woman just wanted to get back to gardening and canning — skills that her mother had taught her while raising her in the small Logan County town of Beason — so she planted a small patch of pepper and tomato plants near her home on Loda’s north edge.

Then it grew.

And grew.


Paxton nursing home conducting back-to-school supplies drive

PAXTON — Paxton Healthcare & Rehab is sponsoring a back-to-school supplies drive through Thursday, Aug. 25. Donations will be accepted at the nursing home located at 1240 N. Market St. in Paxton. Supplies will be donated to schools in Paxton.

PAXTON — The Ford County Public Health Department is hosting a back-to-school drive to assist school-aged children in Ford County.
