Beth Nuss — creator of Fighting Illini 'war chant' — not happy about ban

CHAMPAIGN — During the 1980-81 school year, as Lou Henson was on the sidelines at the Assembly Hall leading his Fighting Illini men’s basketball team, Beth Nuss turned to her fellow University of Illinois pep band members and asked them to play a simple melody.

LODA – The evening prior to Thursday’s Paxton Area Chamber of Commerce golf scramble, I made a trip to Wal-Mart in Rantoul.

I needed some golf balls. While Wal-Mart may not be the most ideal place to look for golf apparel, it did have a box of a dozen golf balls available for less than $6, so it did the job.

Coaches vs. Cancer event set for April 15

CHAMPAIGN — The second-annual American Cancer Society Coaches vs. Cancer Dinner and Auction is planned for Tuesday, April 15, in Champaign.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, located at 1501 S. Neil St. in Champaign.

As a 2009 graduate of Illinois State University, I have had the chance to watch Wichita State games live.

My alma mater pulled off a victory over the Shockers in my senior year at the university.

Obviously, times have changed, and WSU has not known the feeling of losing very often recently.


NCAA bars Illini from holding scrimmage at Rantoul high school

RANTOUL — Monday evening’s Fighting Illini scrimmage at Rantoul Township High School will be moved to the Camp Rantoul site on the grounds of the former Chanute Air Force Base.

Kent Brown, associate athletic director, said the move had to be made because of an NCAA ruling.

Previously scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., it will now begin at 5:30 p.m., Brown said.


Paxton Record sports editor Andrew Rosten visits Chicago Bears training camp

BOURBONNAIS – The Chicago Bears’ first-year head coach Marc Trestman signed autographs for some fans following his team’s first day of training camp practice Friday.

He said to one of the fans something that could have easily been said to me – “You’re never going to forget this day.”
