Leaking roof causes damage to Ludlow school

LUDLOW — Ludlow Grade School officials are frustrated.

When a new roof is installed, leaks are supposed to be nonexistent — at least for several years.

That has not been the case. One leak caused “quite a bit of damage in the sixth-grade classroom,” Superintendent Dru Lobmaster said. “We lost textbooks, which our insurance had to cover.”


IEPA fines Ludlow resident for alleged open dumping of wastes

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has issued an administrative citation for $1,500 to the Brian Gerdes estate and executor Dana Marshall of Ludlow for alleged violations of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act.

The citation was for allegedly open dumping of wastes. Used tires had also allegedly been dumped.

URBANA — Federal authorities gained permission from a judge several weeks ago to search an email account believed to be used by the leader of a Ford County militia group linked to acts of terrorism, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Urbana.


Ludlow Grade School receives grant for new playground equipment

LUDLOW — Ludlow Grade School has received a $25,918 Healthy Community Investment Grant for new playground equipment, and community members will help install the equipment.

Superintendent Dru Lobmaster said the community build is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Aug. 17, and Saturday, Aug. 18.


Area residents named to Parkland College dean's list

CHAMPAIGN — A number of students from the area were among the 1,095 students named to Parkland College’s dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester. To make the list, students must earn a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 grading scale for the semester.


Gibson City woman dies in two-vehicle collision

DEWEY — A two-vehicle collision in northwest Champaign County on Tuesday, June 5, claimed the life of a Gibson City woman.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Barbara J. Roth, 58, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision at the intersection of county roads 3200 North and 1100 East at 6:55 p.m.


Ford County men will be tried on Illinois machine-gun charges first

URBANA — Federal prosecutors in Urbana will try their case against four Ford County men before prosecutors in Minnesota proceed with theirs against three of the men accused of bombing a mosque there, a judge ruled Monday.

Both prosecutors and defense attorneys had asked for a 60-day delay in the Minnesota case.
