Gibson City woman dies in two-vehicle collision

DEWEY — A two-vehicle collision in northwest Champaign County on Tuesday, June 5, claimed the life of a Gibson City woman.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Barbara J. Roth, 58, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision at the intersection of county roads 3200 North and 1100 East at 6:55 p.m.


Rural Dewey resident bilked of $750

DEWEY — A rural Dewey resident was bilked out of $750 possibly through an Internet scam.

Champaign County sheriff’s Lt. Brian Mennenga said between Feb. 17 and 19, a resident of the 3200 block of Greenwod Drive, rural Dewey, said he believes someone gained access to his credit card number when it was used to pay for fixing his computer online.


Lower gas prices = more driving = more ethanol needed

DEWEY — Good news at the gas pump is good news to farmers, as well.

Darrel Good told those attending the Dewey Bank Annual Farm Seminar Wednesday that government projections forecast an increase of 2 percent to 3 percent in fuel use among U.S. drivers this year. That would mean more corn-based ethanol consumption.

West Nile prevention tips offered

URBANA — West Nile virus was recently found to be present in a dead bird collected in Champaign County, bringing to 25 the number of counties in Illinois reporting the presence of the virus this year. Although no human cases of the virus have been reported, University of Illinois Extension entomologist Phil Nixon says it’s best to be extra diligent to protect yourself.


West Nile shows up in bird in Champaign County

CHAMPAIGN — West Nile virus has arrived in Champaign County for the first time this year.

A dead bird collected last week outside the city limits of Champaign tested positive for the virus, according to the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.
