Rural Ludlow shed destroyed by fire

LUDLOW — A mail carrier delivering to a rural Ludlow residence alerted the occupants of the home that their machine shed was on fire Thursday morning.

The blaze, fed by strong winds, destroyed the pole building located about 5 miles west of Ludlow at 3539 Champaign County Road 1200 East.

LUDLOW — Village trustees heard more details on a 70 percent USDA grant that will help pay for replacing the town’s water mains and water plant.

Leaking roof causes damage to Ludlow school

LUDLOW — Ludlow Grade School officials are frustrated.

When a new roof is installed, leaks are supposed to be nonexistent — at least for several years.

That has not been the case. One leak caused “quite a bit of damage in the sixth-grade classroom,” Superintendent Dru Lobmaster said. “We lost textbooks, which our insurance had to cover.”

IEPA fines Ludlow resident for alleged open dumping of wastes

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has issued an administrative citation for $1,500 to the Brian Gerdes estate and executor Dana Marshall of Ludlow for alleged violations of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act.

The citation was for allegedly open dumping of wastes. Used tires had also allegedly been dumped.

Ludlow Grade School receives grant for new playground equipment

LUDLOW — Ludlow Grade School has received a $25,918 Healthy Community Investment Grant for new playground equipment, and community members will help install the equipment.

Superintendent Dru Lobmaster said the community build is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Aug. 17, and Saturday, Aug. 18.

Solar farm proposed southwest of Ludlow

LUDLOW — Work continues on a Champaign County zoning ordinance by the Zoning Board of Appeals that would regulate solar farms.

A rural Ludlow Township site is one of two that a Washington, D.C-based company hopes to turn into a community solar farm.

U.S. 45 to be closed to traffic between Paxton, Rantoul

LUDLOW — U.S. 45 will be closed to traffic between Paxton and Rantoul from April 2 until Sept. 28.

The two-lane highway will be closed to all traffic starting about three miles south of Paxton as workers repair a bridge over the Big Four drainage ditch.

Drivers are advised to use an alternate route.

Ludlow man hit and killed by a train

LUDLOW — A 26-year-old Ludlow man was killed when he was struck by a passenger train in Ludlow on Sunday evening.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Eric Morales was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:20 p.m.

Northrup said a pedestrian reported seeing Mr. Morales attempting to cross the railroad tracks just north of the intersection of Thomas and North Chestnut streets.

$6,000 worth of textbooks lost in water leak

LUDLOW — Ludlow Grade School lost about $6,000 worth of textbooks from a recent classroom water leak.

Superintendent Dru Lobmaster told the school board at last week’s meeting that faulty gutters were blamed for the problem. The room where the books had been kept has a relatively new roof.

Lost were My Math curriculum and reading curriculum books.

Marc Miller hired as Ludlow's attorney

LUDLOW — A new village attorney has been hired by the Ludlow Village Board.

The board last week approved the hiring of Marc Miller of the Miller & Hendren law firm, Champaign.

Miller spoke to the board, discussed his credentials and said he charges $175 per hour for municipalities.
