Crimestoppers seeks info on Patton Cemetery vandalism

CHAMPAIGN — Crimestoppers and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office are asking for help finding the person or people responsible for vandalism at a cemetery in northern Champaign County.

Theft of rural cemetery fence evokes 'disgust'

RURAL PENFIELD — Maureen Hughes felt only one thing — “disgust” — when she realized that large sections of an ornate wrought-iron fence had been stolen from one of Champaign County’s oldest cemeteries late last month.

“It’s just uncalled for that somebody could desecrate a cemetery like that,” the retired one-time police officer said.

Man arrested in meth case while awaiting sentencing on earlier meth case

RANTOUL — A Penfield man awaiting sentencing for methamphetamine and weapons-related crimes has been arrested again for a methamphetamine-related offense.

Brian Wernigk, 33, was charged Wednesday, Jan. 13, with possession of between 20 and 100 grams of methamphetamine precursors, a Class X felony, following his Jan. 12 arrest in Rantoul for an alleged shoplifting.

URBANA — Champaign County Board members have gone on record as being opposed to legislation in Springfield that they contend would weaken their oversight of wind farms.

Early results show turbines not exceeding noise limits, firm’s lawyer says

DANVILLE — The preliminary indication from a sound study at the California Ridge Wind Project is that turbines are not exceeding Illinois noise limits, according to an attorney with Invenergy, the wind farm owner.

DNA testing on skull, bone found near Paxton delayed

RURAL PAXTON — It could be early next year before DNA testing is done on skeletal remains found in a river southeast of Paxton.

For several weeks, the state police crime lab in Springfield has been in possession of the human skull and bone found in early August in the Big Four Ditch, which flows out of the Middle Fork River in northern Champaign County and southern Ford County.

West Nile prevention tips offered

URBANA — West Nile virus was recently found to be present in a dead bird collected in Champaign County, bringing to 25 the number of counties in Illinois reporting the presence of the virus this year. Although no human cases of the virus have been reported, University of Illinois Extension entomologist Phil Nixon says it’s best to be extra diligent to protect yourself.

A dead bird collected last week outside the city limits of Champaign tested positive for the virus, according to the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.

PENFIELD — Back in the early days of automobiles, many farmers used their cars as pickup trucks on the farm and out in the field, according to John Fredrickson, president of the I&I Antique Tractor and Small Engine Club.
