SAVOY — Matt Neaville, ironically, is the old man on the block today on the newly formed Champaign Swarm professional basketball team.

Ironic, given that when I used to hoop with Matt, he was always the youngest person on the court.


Patriot Rovers group gives service dogs to veterans with PTSD, brain injuries

SAVOY — Like some 90 other golden retrievers trained by the Patriot Rovers organization, Derby is more than a man’s best friend.

He’s trained to be a protector, even a life-saver, for a soldier who has returned from combat with a traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).


Champaign County Board opposes bill on wind farms

URBANA — Champaign County Board members have gone on record as being opposed to legislation in Springfield that they contend would weaken their oversight of wind farms.


West Nile prevention tips offered

URBANA — West Nile virus was recently found to be present in a dead bird collected in Champaign County, bringing to 25 the number of counties in Illinois reporting the presence of the virus this year. Although no human cases of the virus have been reported, University of Illinois Extension entomologist Phil Nixon says it’s best to be extra diligent to protect yourself.


West Nile shows up in bird in Champaign County

CHAMPAIGN — West Nile virus has arrived in Champaign County for the first time this year.

A dead bird collected last week outside the city limits of Champaign tested positive for the virus, according to the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.


Buckley woman arrested for shoplifting at Wal-Mart

SAVOY — A Buckley woman was arrested after Champaign County sheriff’s deputies  responded to a report of a shoplifter at the Wal-Mart store in Savoy.

The incident was reported at 2:58 p.m. March 14. A store employee said Tara L. Casper, 26, of Buckley, was seen removing items from the store without buying them.

Panther Regiment to perform at Honor Flight homecoming

SAVOY — Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School’s marching band, the Panther Regiment, has received a special invitation to perform at a homecoming ceremony for World War II veterans attending an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

The estimated time for the return of the flight and the subsequent homecoming ceremony is 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at Willard Airport in Savoy.
