PAXTON — While the voter turnout in the Nov. 6 general election was 57.5 percent in Ford County, it was much higher in certain areas of the county.

Fire destroys shed, combine harvester at farm near Melvin

MELVIN — A fire early Monday morning on a rural Melvin farm did an estimated $350,000 to $400,000 in damage, destroying a newly built shed and a combine harvester and other equipment inside of it, Melvin’s fire chief said.

MELVIN — Kaiti Zbinden did her best to hide her nervousness when she took the stage in the dance building at the Ford County fairgrounds in Melvin for her first beauty pageant since she was a young girl.

“I was extremely nervous,” the 19-year-old Gibson City woman said. “I was shaking.”

MELVIN — In a news release Tuesday, Ford County Fair officials said they have become aware of several websites selling counterfeit tickets to the fair’s Travis Tritt concert scheduled for Friday, June 29.

Ford County Fair features something for everyone

MELVIN — This year’s Ford County Fair, running June 24-30, features concerts, action and events for family members of all ages.

The fair opens Sunday, June 24, with the western horse show at 10 a.m. The jackpot gilt show starts at 5 p.m. that day.

Monday night features the annual fair queen pageant at 7 p.m. in the dance building.

Ford County Fair entry deadline nearing

MELVIN — The deadline for all junior and open show entries at this year’s Ford County Fair is Monday, June 18.

Entries should be sent to: Jane Meyer, 1795 N. 1800 East Road, Thawville, IL 60968. They must be received or postmarked by June 18.

Entries may also be brought to the secretary’s office on the fairgrounds in Melvin between noon and 4 p.m. June 18.

Melvin home destroyed by fire

MELVIN — A vacant home in Melvin was destroyed by fire Wednesday evening, and the state fire marshal’s office was investigating the cause Thursday.

Melvin Fire Chief Larry Boundy said an estimated 25 volunteer firefighters from Melvin, Roberts, Elliott and Gibson City battled the blaze at the 1 1/2-story home at 109 S. Green St.

Sheriff issues warning to drivers in Ford County

PAXTON — Following three fatal traffic accidents in Ford County in March, Sheriff Mark Doran said the sheriff’s department will be ramping up efforts to ensure drivers are obeying the law.
