Men's ensemble concert a hit in Gibson City

GIBSON CITY — An enthusiastic crowd enjoyed an evening of a cappella music Friday night as the Constellation Men’s Ensemble of Chicago brought their music to the American Lutheran Church in Gibson City.

Composed of musicians ranging from an opera singer to music teachers to a conductor with the Chicago Children’s Choir, the group entertained with songs including traditional music from both Ireland and the Republic of Georgia as well as a song by the popular group Pentatonix. The concert was sponsored by the Gibson Area Music Foundation.

Gibson City native Patrick Volker is one of the members of Constellation. After living in Chicago for almost 10 years he loved coming back home to share his music with the town that gave so much to him.

“It was kind of great right now doing the sound check,” Volker said. “To see people I haven’t seen in 15 years coming to see a really nice concert means a lot to me.

“The goal has always been to bring music to as many people as possible. That’s why I’m a teacher, and that’s why I like to sing in groups and do shows to show there’s something beautiful in music to bring people together.”

Several members of Volker’s family were in attendance at the concert, including his mother, Lisa, who flew in from Alaska to visit the grandchildren and take in the concert.

“I’m very proud,” she said.  “Some of the songs were very touching. I liked the variety of songs that they did, which really showed off the talent of all the guys.”

Val Hunt, secretary of the music foundation, said this is the first time the foundation has sponsored a concert featuring artists from outside the Gibson City area. She said they may continue to sponsor performances from outside groups depending on how well this concert did. If the spontaneous applause and two standing ovations are any evidence, Gibson City may be seeing more concerts in the future.
