Penfield man killed, Cissna Park man injured in head-on crash

FISHER — A Penfield man was killed and a Cissna Park man injured when their vehicles collided head-on last Wednesday morning west of Fisher.

Dennis E. Reed Jr., 43, was pronounced dead at 6:50 a.m. at the scene of the crash.

Gregory W. Maul, 31, was injured and transported to Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. No information was available on his condition, a Carle spokeswoman said.

Illinois State Police at Pesotum said Mr. Reed was eastbound on U.S. 136 at Champaign County Road 100E. His 1989 GMC pickup truck crossed the center line and struck the westbound Maul vehicle, a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck, head-on.

The intersection is 5 miles west of Fisher.

Both men were the sole occupants of their vehicles, and both men had to be extricated, state police said.

An autopsy conducted last Wednesday by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office found that Mr. Reed died from multiple blunt-force injuries sustained in the crash.

Mr. Reed’s obituary appears in this edition.
