Judge to issue opinion in online harassment case filed against bus company owner

WAUKEGAN — The public won’t know a judge’s verdict for a Champaign bus company owner accused of online harassment until May.

Suburban Express owner Dennis Toeppen was on trial this week before a Lake County judge on two charges of electronic harassment.

Toeppen is accused of harassing then-University of Illinois student Jeremy Leval after Leval spread the word about an incident he saw where he claims a Suburban Express driver yelled at a customer.

The trial wrapped up Wednesday, but the judge is not expected to issue a written opinion until May 2.

Toeppen and Leval are also involved in a civil case in Cook County, where Leval accuses Toeppen of defamation of character.

People in Ford County might remember when Toeppen drew criticism from University of Illinois students a few years ago after he filed a series of small-claims cases against Suburban Express bus riders in Ford County Circuit Court.
