Choose 2 Change Studios opening Jan. 11 in Gibson City

GIBSON CITY — If cold and wet weather has you searching for an outlet for youthful energy, a business expansion in Gibson City offers answers in a fun, new environment.

Choose 2 Change Fitness Club in Gibson City is opening a second location — known as Choose 2 Change Studios — on Jan. 11 at 510 W. 9th St. in Gibson City.

Co-owners Scott and Lesley Davis and Casey Powell made the decision to expand their business in May 2015. After agreeing to buy the former Pentecostal Church location by Memorial Day, the Davises have been working to remodel the property.

The couple first worked on the building’s exterior and landscaping until the purchase was finalized in September, at which time interior remodeling began in earnest. Bright colors on the walls and selected ceiling tiles give a bright and cheery look to the space.

Scott Davis said the former sanctuary area on the building’s west side sold them on the building, as it offers 2,200 square feet of open space. Taking out the church’s stage and baptismal area were the hardest part of the remodel, he said.

The first classes to utilize the space are a new offering for the business: multiple eight-week tumbling classes for children ages 3 years and up. Lesley Davis said tumbling is an activity that customers have asked for “since Day 1.”

Tumbling class sign-ups are already under way. Lesley Davis said some classes are already full, but space is still available in some. Full information is available on the business’ website. Tumbling instructors, assisted by Sydney Rueck, will be Caity Heap and Page Cowell.

In addition to a large floor area covered in tumbling mats, a climbing wall will assist with core strength and balance. The wall features a mountainous background with kid-friendly motivational words such as “achieve” and “go for it.” Parents can watch through mirrored openings in a partial wall added for this purpose.

When the couple are finished remodeling the 1,200 square feet on the east side of the building, another new service will be offered: hosting children’s birthday parties. Each event will include an hour of tumbling and free play, followed by space with tables and chairs for refreshments.

The owners’ goal is to eventually house all studio-type classes at the new location. The new location will eventually house the dance, martial arts and studio fitness classes currently being taught in the business’ main location at 921 S. Sangamon Ave. in Gibson City.

With only 800 square feet, the Sangamon Avenue location is a much smaller space, so moving classes to the new studio will free space at the original location for added fitness equipment and a weight room later in 2016.

Lesley Davis said additional class offerings tailored to youth are on the horizon, such as fitness classes that will involve the climbing wall and a bent wall to be installed for “ninja-style” agility maneuvers.

The business’ original location opened in 2008 when the group purchased the former Hicks Gas/Cender Gas location on Gibson City’s south side.

Two of the three owners are natives of Gibson City. Casey Powell is the daughter of Steve and Vicki Rhodes, and Scott Davis is the son of Tom and Debbie Davis.

Powell now lives in Heyworth with her husband, Matt Powell. They are parents to four children: Reese, Nick, Miley and Hannah. Powell is involved with personal training and assisting fitness club members at the main location with the cardio and weight machines.

Powell said fitness has always been a personal passion because “feeling great from the inside out is key.” She sees the new location as important for keeping children active, too.

Scott Davis, 43, said he opens the main location at 6 a.m. before going to work at his family’s business, Davis Welding. He said the business side of the Choose 2 Change operation appeals most to him. He and his dad also make up the main remodeling crew.

In his “spare” time, Davis is an city council alderman and chairs the finance committee.

Davis met his wife, Lesley, 41, when the couple both worked at Mitsubishi in the 1990s. The couple moved back to Gibson City in 2005, where they were happy to raise their two children: Jessalyn and Rylan.

Lesley Davis, a native of Normal, said she has always been involved with running and weight-lifting, with a passion to do something further with it. She is also the driving force behind ideas for the new location, and said she is grateful that Powell gave her “free rein” to head up the expansion.

After the Jan. 11 opening, a public open house for the new facility is tentatively scheduled for the following weekend.
