PAXTON — Come election time in April, the Paxton Park District’s board is going to have a different look.
Eric Evans, the current park board president, did not file for re-election by the Dec. 26 deadline. Neither did board member Kathleen McCabe.
That leaves three candidates — Brad Strebeck, Steve Sample and Gwen Smith, all incumbents — running for five open seats.
Evans said he chose not to run again because he wanted to be more active with his volunteer duties as president of the Paxton Fire Protection District board and chairman of the Ford County 911 board.
Evans also said there have been some changes in his personal life that led to his decision. Evans is engaged to be married later this year.
With Evans’ departure, the park board will appoint a new president following the April 9 consolidated election. Unless any write-in candidates apply to be listed on the ballot prior to the write-in filing deadline of Feb. 7, the board will also need to appoint two new members after the election.
“You just need to care, have an open mind and care about the adults and children of the community,” Evans said. “You don’t have to have any special qualifications. You just have to be willing to try it.”
