PAXTON — The Paxton Park District’s board has a write-in candidate for the April 9 election.
Sally Bemount, a 52-year-old substitute bus driver for kindergarten through eighth-grade-level schools in Rantoul, will look to add park board meetings to her work schedule. She recently filed as a write-in candidate for election to a four-year term on the board in the April 9 consolidated election.
“It’s something that I’ve thought about doing for a while — for, oh, about eight years,” Bemount said. “I would have filed a petition, but I just didn’t get there in time. I’m an easy person get along with. I’m open to suggestions and comments, but I’m not afraid to take action where needed.”
Bemount received a degree in therapeutic recreation at Parkland College in Champaign.
Since then, she has worked as a dental assistant in Champaign and for Dr. Kevin Brucker in Gibson City and as a teacher’s aid at the special education co-op in Rantoul.
In between those jobs and taking care of her 7-year-old son, Caleb, Bemount said she did not have time in the past to be involved with the park board.
“I would sometimes work overtime and what not, which would make me unavailable for meetings,” Bemount said. “Now I have a job that will make me be more available and a son who’s a little bit older now. I wanted to be more involved. I just never had time to do it.”
Bemount lives at 215 Stockholm Road in Paxton with her husband, Larry, a retired Kraft Foods employee, and their 7-year-old son, Caleb, and 13-year-old nephew, Ian Tate.
Bemount has never been elected to office, but she ran for Paxton city clerk several years ago, finishing third in a three-way race.
Bemount’s name will not appear on the ballot, but voters may request a list of write-in candidates from which they can choose. There are still no candidates for one other seat on the park board that is up for election; three other available seats have candidates.
Anyone interested in filing as a write-in candidate fcan do so by contacting the Ford County Clerk’s Office.
The only other write-in to have filed is Carol J. Carroll, for a term as trustee on the Piper City Village Board.
