Nusses attend Catholic mass with Pope Francis

Mitch and Beth Nuss of Paxton recently returned from Italy, where they had the opportunity to attend Catholic Mass with Pope Francis for the canonization of Mother Teresa becoming a saint on Sunday, Sept. 4.

In January, the Nusses began planning their trip to Italy. As dates and plans came together, they discovered they would be in Rome on a Sunday.

“Out of curiosity, I asked our local priest, Father Jose of St. Mary’s Church in Paxton, if he thought there may be a chance we could attend Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica celebrated by Pope Francis,” said Beth Nuss. “Father Jose thought this could be a possibility and began helping us navigate the process.”

Eventually, the Nusses found help through the Diocese of Joliet. Paperwork had to be filed with the Vatican to ask for two tickets to be granted to the Nusses. The Vatican requires tickets; however, the tickets are free of charge.

The Vatican does not release a final schedule of events for the Pope until two to three months prior, so the Nusses had to wait to hear back from the Vatican to see if Pope Francis would even be holding a public mass  on Sept. 4.

In July, the Nusses were notified by the Joliet Diocese that they were granted their request.

“Tears welled up in my eyes when the Diocese called,” said Beth Nuss.

Not only did the Nusses receive tickets for mass with Pope Francis, but they were notified this would be the extra-special mass for the canonization of Mother Teresa as a saint.

On Sept. 5, 1997, one of the most popular and widely admired persons of the 20th Century, known to all as Mother Teresa of Calcutta, passed away. Although her origins were humble and her life-work focused on the mundane daily service to the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta, Mother Teresa became world famous as an example of the kind of loving service that only the exceptional would follow. At the time of her death, Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity had more than 4,000 sisters and an associated brotherhood of 300 members, operating 610 missions in 123 countries.

As the Nusses arrived in Rome, they first had to meet with Vatican nuns and go through a briefing regarding protocol.  The Vatican is its own country and has various rules and security.

The day of mass, the Nusses were up early, arriving at St. Peter’s Square at 5:15 a.m.

“The line of people waiting to go to 10:30 Mass was amazing,” said Beth Nuss. “Some slept on the street overnight in sleeping bags. Many were singing, praying and saying the Rosary. It was moving to see so many from all around the world excited to attend mass!”

Some 100,000 people attended mass. Pope Francis had various parts of the mass said in different languages to make all feel welcome, but the majority of mass was said in Italian. All attendees were given booklets with translations to follow along during mass. Members of Mother Teresa’s order (nuns) were in attendance, along with people who have claimed miracles performed by Mother Teresa.

After mass, Pope Francis was driven around St. Peter’s Square in his Pope Mobile to wave at mass attendees.

“This was definitely an opportunity of a lifetime,” said Beth Nuss. “We are blessed to have had the honor of being able to attend such a special mass!”
