PAXTON — Donations to the PBL Area Community Food Pantry in Paxton helped provide food for more than 100 families each month of 2012, the pantry announced.
“The donations were so great that we were able to provide hams with the fixings for the holiday, in addition to the regular monthly food boxes,” said food pantry board member Nancy Taylor.
Rummage sales conducted by Don Sutton brought in some extra money, as well.
The board of directors for the food pantry, located at 780 S. Vermilion St., met Jan. 8, learning that 2012 ended better than previous years as there was money to pay operating costs and purchase food with some money left over to begin the 2013 year.
Donations come from individuals, churches and businesses.
“Without this support, our pantry could not exist,” Taylor said.
The food pantry’s director is Millie Sutton. New volunteers Angela Larson and Debbie Kafer have donated many hours to help Millie Sutton distribute food on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Others involved in the pantry’s operation include Russ and Nancy Taylor, who take care of the garbage produce on a weekly basis; and Gary Popel, who serves as treasurer and handles the pantry’s banking needs with the help of accountant Nick Fiorillo. Albert Sutton has also assisted by spreading gravel and maintaining the pantry’s parking lot when needed.
Board members for 2013 are Millie Baier, Sherry Eyre, Fiorillo, Lori Johnson, Don Miller, Nancy Pendleton, Popel and Nancy Taylor.
