RANTOUL — Wilmer “W.O.” Smith, 87, of Rantoul, died at 5:16 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at Heartland Health Care Center, Paxton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Baier Family Funeral Services, 406 E. Pells St., Paxton, with the Rev. Dr. Ken Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in Ludlow Township Cemetery, rural Rantoul, with military honors accorded by members of the Ludlow, Rantoul and Paxton American Legion posts. Visitation will be held one hour before the funeral service on Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith was born Nov. 25, 1924, in rural Ludlow, the son of William O. and Martha O. Whitcomb Smith. He married Helene Hunn on May 21, 1960, in Rantoul. She died Aug. 13, 2001.
Surviving are two sons, Wayne O. Smith of Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Brett H. (Tammi) Smith of Champaign; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Anna Lou Gibbs of Paxton and Mary (Carl) Martin of Ludlow.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Mr. Smith attended Ludlow schools and graduated from Paxton High School. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Rendova in the South Pacific during World War II. He was president and co-owner of Magic Glass Inc., Lafayette, Ind.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Ludlow Christian Church, the Ludlow American Legion Post 518 and the Paxton Masonic Lodge No. 416 A.F. & A.M. He enjoyed fishing, boating and gardening. He was known for his keen sense of humor.
