Laurence Earl “Larry” Young

BUCKLEY — Laurence Earl “Larry” Young, 81, of rural Buckley, died at 3:34 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, at his home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Paxton Church of Christ, 400 W. Ottawa Road, Paxton, with the Rev. Tom Anders officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, Buckley. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Paxton Church of Christ and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at the church.  Baier Family Funeral Services in Buckley is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Young was born March 29, 1937, in rural Buckley, the son of Joe and Emma Lehmann Young. He married Karla Stifle on May 1, 1959, in Clinton. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Scott (Evelyn) Young of Loda; one daughter, Lori (Tracy) Epps of Loda; four grandchildren, Tyler (Alex) Young of Buckley, Frannie Epps of Chicago, Todd Epps of Urbana and Preston Young of Normal; three step-grandchildren, Gregory (Jo) Baxter of Durham, N.C., Matthew Landini of Bloomington, Ind., and Elizabeth Landini of Gainesville, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Harper and Liberty; one sister, Elizabeth (Stephen) Shively of Peoria; two special nephews, Todd (Stephanie) Shively of rural Buckley and Jerry (Heidi) Lemper of Ames, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Jack (Shelby) Stifle of Urbana; and three sisters-in-law,  Fran (Skip) Lemper of Waterloo, Iowa, Dorothy Young of Paxton and Joann Johns of Hoopeston.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Leslie, Bill, Robert, Kenneth and Marvin; and one sister, Wilma Pfeiffer.

Mr. Young’s first three years of school were spent in a one-room country schoolhouse directly across the road from the house in which he was born and raised. He graduated from Buckley-Loda High School in 1955.  He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958.  He was a farmer his entire life, having once said, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Mr. Young was a member of the Paxton Church of Christ, where he had served as a deacon and trustee and was also a past secretary and treasurer on the church board. He served as an Artesia Township trustee and ditch commissioner for many years and was a member of the Buckley Elevator Board. 

Mr. Young enjoyed gardening and yard work, and he participated in tractor pulls many years ago. He loved traveling to visit family and hosting foreign students from many lands on his farm.
