Mildred L. "Milly" Alexander

GIBSON CITY — Mildred I. “Milly” Alexander, 85, of Gibson City, formerly of Elliott, died at 11:57 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, at Helia Healthcare in Champaign.

Funeral services will be at noon Friday, Jan. 11, at Baier Family Funeral Services, 406 E. Pells St., Paxton, with the Rev. James C. Elder officiating. Burial will follow in Elliott Cemetery, Elliott. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday, Jan. 11, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Alexander was born May 6, 1933, in Berea, Ky., the daughter of Charles R. and Mildred F. Paxton Cottrell. She spent her childhood in Paxton and graduated from Paxton High School in 1951. She married Donald E. Alexander on Dec. 21, 1952, at the United Methodist Church in Paxton. He died July 1, 2018. 

Surviving are two sons, Bob (Lynette) Alexander of Gibson City and Doug Alexander of Bloomington; two daughters, Nancy (Dan) Hiner of Champaign and Linda (Paul) Smith of Mattoon; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bob Cottrell of Satellite Beach, Fla.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Mark Alexander; and one brother, Dick Cottrell.

Mrs. Alexander worked for the United States Postal Service for 21 years, including the last 13 as postmaster in Elliott, before retiring in 1992. She was a member of the Wesbein United Methodist Church in Saybrook and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States. She enjoyed knitting, playing golf and traveling. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
