GCMS volleyball loses 25-21, 25-10 to Fieldcrest in IHSA Class 2A Minonk Regional semifinals

MINONK — The Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley volleyball team ended its season with a 25-21, 25-10 loss Tuesday, Oct. 23, to No. 3-seed Fieldcrest in the IHSA Class 2A Minonk Regional semifinals.

"We started out the season setting goals. The goal this year was to reach the 10-win mark," GCMS head coach Taylor Rubarts said. "After looking back at previous wins in a season, that hasn't been accomplished since 2011. So this year, we reached that goal."
The seventh-seeded Falcons ended their season with an record of 10-17, including a 3-9 record in the Heart of Illinois Conference Tournament, a 3-2 record in the Paxton-Buckley-Loda Classic and a victory over Lexington in the HOIC Tournament.
"The girls have definitely grown as a team this year and are starting to believe they can win volleyball games," Rubarts said.
GCMS is graduating one senior -- Claire Retherford, who had four kills in Tuesday's regional semifinal match.
"I have to get a huge shoutout to Claire Retherford for being an incredible teammate and leader for us this year," Rubarts said. "Claire isn't the most flashy player, but she is one of the smartest players I have coached. She sees the floor so well and continued to get strong as the year went on.
"She ended up second for us in kills this year and I couldn't be prouder with how she is leaving the program. The girls have big shoes to fill."
Sophomore Jessica Freehill led the Falcons in kills with five during Tuesdsay's match while junior Emily Clinton had three kills, sophomore Lindsey Heinz had three blocks, junior Mady Schutte had an ace, nine assists and nine digs and Madison Eberle had 12 digs.
Six of the Falcons' seven starters are returning next year.
"We definitely look forward to having everyone back next year," Rubarts said. "With work in the off season doing strength and conditioning, we can't wait to see what the future holds for GCMS volleyball.
"A big shout out to everyone who came out to support us all season and who have given the girls positive feedback on their improvements. It's greatly appreciated."
