Watseka and Gifford-Flatville split an Eastern Illinois League doubleheader in Gifford on Sunday, the visiting Angels winning the opener 3-1 before the host Gif-Flats responded with a 2-1 win in Game 2.
Watseka broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the eighth inning of Game 1. Seth Woods earned the win, while Dane Krone took the loss. In Game 2, Watseka had an early 1-0 lead, but Gifford-Flatville scored twice in the third inning and the pitchers controlled the way for the rest of the game. Evan West was the winner, and Cole Nesselrodt suffered the loss. The Gif-Flats won despite getting just three hits.
Watseka now sits at 7-7 overall, good for third place in the North Division, which is led by Buckley at 12-2. Gifford-Flatville is 9-5, one game behind Royal in the South Division.
All EI games take place at Buckley on Sunday. Watseka plays Central Illinois at noon, and Gifford-Flatville plays Paxton at 2 p.m. Royal and Buckley play at 4 p.m. to conclude the three-game jamboree that takes the place of the originally scheduled all-star game.
