It took surviving a day that featured 49 runs, 54 hits and 10 errors, but visiting Central Illinois swept a pair of contests at Colfax on Sunday in an Eastern Illinois Baseball League doubleheader, winning the opener 17-10 before registering a 13-9 victory in Game 2.
The Robins set the tone for the day’s offensive fireworks by scoring six runs in the top of the first inning in the opener. After the Outlaws trimmed their deficit to 9-6 after seven innings, the Robins responded by plating a combined eight runs in the final two frames to secure the win.
In Game 2, Central Illinois scored four times apiece in the first and second innings to open an early 8-0 lead, then scored three big runs in the fifth inning after Colfax had climbed to within 10-7.
With the sweep, Central Illinois improved to 9-10 and climbed into a tie with Paxton (9-10) for the fifth seed for the EI League tournament that begins with quarterfinals on Aug. 4. That seed will be determined when the two teams play their regular-season finale doubleheaders this Sunday.
Colfax is locked into the seventh seed for the tournament. It will likely face Buckley in the tournament quarterfinals, as the Dutchmasters only need to win one game against Watseka this weekend to clinch the second seed.
