Schmidt’s big night not enough to lift Christ Lutheran to 1st victory of season

A monster performance from Casey Schmidt was wasn’t quite enough for Christ Lutheran to pick up its first win of the season last Thursday.

Facing Normal Calvary Christian in the seventh-place game of the East Central Illinois Conference tournament in Champaign, Christ Lutheran took a four-point lead into the final quarter with the help of Schmidt, who had a game-high 34 points.

But the Crusaders struggled down the stretch, as they were outscored 22-10 in the last eight minutes en route to a 53-45 loss that dropped them to 0-18 on the year.
Schmidt had a hot hand from behind the arc, hitting six 3-pointers. The senior guard had all of Christ Lutheran’s points in the first half as it took a 28-18 lead into the break.

Only two other Crusaders scored. Shane Hewerdine had six points, and Jacob Lessman had five.

Christ Lutheran opened postseason play against Tri-Point on Tuesday (it ended after the Record’s deadline) in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A Cissna Park Regional. A win would move the Crusaders into a Wednesday semifinal.
