McCoy wins record 9th Lakeview title

Paxton resident Doug McCoy survived the heat to capture the Lakeview Country Club Men’s Championship on July 14-15. McCoy took a seven-shot lead into the final nine holes before holding off a late charge by runner-up Brad Cosgrove.

McCoy’s winning total of 227 for the 54-hole tournament was two shots ahead of Cosgrove and four shots better than third-place finisher Terry Seibert. Eric Gerdes took fourth at 232, followed by Andy Gooden’s 234. Shane Allen, Nate McCabe and Mark Prina all tied for sixth at 237.

“It wasn’t pretty, but it got the job done,” said McCoy, whose Sunday approach shots, especially on par 3s, were often off-target. But McCoy, a deft short-game player, repeatedly got up-and-down for pars.

The championship was McCoy’s record ninth Lakeview title. McCoy is also the course 18-hole record holder at Lakeview with a seven-under 64.

The first flight title went to Bud Beck at 247. Dennis Short and Jim Carpenter tied for second at 250.
