Watseka’s Seth Woods fired a three-hit shutout and struck out 12 as the Angels blanked the Central Illinois Robins, 2-0, in the opening game of Sunday’s Eastern Illinois Baseball League jamboree at Buckley’s Scheiwe Field.
A senior-to-be at Lincoln Memorial, the unbeaten Woods has baseball as only a weekly pursuit this summer.
“I throw on Sundays and then give my arm a rest,” Woods said.
Woods (6-0) doesn’t mind a schedule that is less hectic then he faced in college.
“I’m having fun playing, and that’s what is most important,” he said.
Central Illinois’ Matt Miller allowed one hit and no earned runs. Both of the Robins’ errors came during Watseka’s two-run fifth inning. Miller recorded six outs on ground balls back to him on the mound.
The lone hit for Watseka (8-7) was a two-out double by Chris Brutlag in the second inning.
Jason Williamson, Jason Campbell and Brad Garrett had hits for the Robins (7-8).
