SPORTS NOTEBOOK: GCMS' Gardner selected to play in high school football Shrine game

JJ Gardner, a 2012 Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley graduate, was honored recently by being selected to play in the Illinois High School Shrine All-Star Football Game at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Gardner was selected to the East’s roster and will be one of 80 recently graduated seniors to play. At GCMS, he was a four-year letterman, three-time all-Heart of Illinois Conference selection as a defensive lineman, two-time all-HOIC selection as an offensive lineman, first-team all-area selection by the Bloomington Pantagraph and Champaign News-Gazette and first-team all-state honoree.

GCMS coach Mike Allen was selected as an assistant coach for the East squad. It will be his second time coaching in the game.

Basketball tournament coming to Roberts Gym

Imagiknation Entertainment is presenting a “Kings of the Kourt” five-on-five basketball tournament on July 28 and 29 at the Roberts Gym.

The double elimination tournament runs from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. the first day and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. the second day. Registration is due by July 26. Each team must be present by 9 a.m. the first day of competition. Payment is allowed on site.

There will be food, raffles, refreshments and a $1,000 grand prize and plaques awarded to the champions.

FCA Golf Scramble set for July 30

This year’s Greg Arends Memorial FCA Golf Scramble will take place July 30 at Railside Golf Club in Gibson City.

Registration and lunch begin at 11:30 a.m., with a shotgun start to follow at 12:30 p.m. A cookout will be held at 5:30 p.m.

Loda mud volleyball taking sign-ups

LODA — Anyone interested in having a mud volleyball team in a tournament that will be part of the annual Loda Good Ole Days celebration in July is asked to contact Richard or Sandy Coffey at 778-4650 or 417-6292.

The Good Ole Days celebration is July 27-29 in Loda. Volleyball starts at noon on July 28.
