PBL wrestlers lose dual meets, finishes 13th in Prairie Central invite

FAIRBURY – In Paxton-Buckley-Loda’s 39-30 dual-meet loss to Heyworth Thursday,  head coach Erik Ronney found no solace in his team’s six match victories.

That was because PBL also lost six matches, four of them via forfeit because the team did not have a wrestler available for those respective weight classes.

“I’m not happy with it,” Ronney said. “I don’t know what else to say about it. I’d be happy if we lost all these matches with a full team. I would rather be an 0-10 team with a full roster rather than having us lose close matches because kids quit. We’re not a quitting team, but apparently that’s what we are, and I’m not happy with it.”

Tyler Ellis pinned his opponent in 55 seconds in the 106-pound division while Colin Sullivan had a pin 1:44 into the 120-pound match.

Jacob Meyer pinned Sam Asmus in the 182-pound bout in a time of 1:54. In the 285-pound division, J.T. Grady won via 5-2 decision.

Conrad Powell claimed victory via injury default in the 195-pound class while Will Boman won by forfeit in the 220-pound division.

“The kids are good,” Ronney said. “The kids are happy and doing well. He just made some simple mistakes. He’s got a lot of time to practice to get on top of that. Colin Sullivan’s doing well. Tyler Ellis wrestled his butt off. Meyer had a huge win. He had a huge pin.

“Conrad had a win, too. He’s got to keep his head in the game. Sometimes, he switches out, but he’s got to be a varsity wrestler. Jacob showed me what he needs to wrestle to get to sectionals, and if he keeps that up, then I know he can be a high-quality wrestler come regionals, but he needs to keep wrestling like that.”

In PBL’s 54-18 loss to Prairie Central in its other dual meet Thursday, the team did not achieve a single match victory. Ellis, Sullivan and Meyer each won by forfeit.

The Panthers finished 13th in Saturday’s Prairie Central Hawk Classic.

Wyatt Morris won fourth place in the 113-pound division while Meyer and Boman each took fifth place in the 195- and 220-pound weight classes, respectively.

PBL’s next wrestling meet took place Tuesday at Mount Zion. The Panthers will take to the Hoopeston Area mat at 6:30 p.m.

“Our time and numbers are low, but we’re going to get there,” Ronney said. “All we’re wrestling for is regionals right now.”
